Profile[]
The Dragon Hunter
Velraine is a 17-year-old girl. The blood of elite dragon slayers flows in her veins--a heritage she despises.
She is the daughter of Maralme, the greatest dragon slayer who's ever lived.
Her mother is strong, stern...and her father's greatest foe.
Her father Reinar is dead.
He met his end while out hunting with Maralme one day, never to return.
Reinar stepped between a fearsome drake and his wife in an effort to protect her. And Maralme cut him down.
From that day, the mother Velraine should have loved became a hateful presence who had robbed her of her father.
Velraine wears her mother's old armor, a perfect fit for the lean and lithe build she has also inherited from her mother.
That gleaming blue armor is a constant and painful reminder of her father's fate.
Velraine's azure eyes are a sign that the dragon blood flowing in her veins has yet to awaken.
She keeps her hair short, as women of the clan are not permitted to grow it out until they officially come of age.
Her pent up rage once got the better of her, sending her on a blind rampage that resulted in tremendous damage.
Some attributed this to the first stirrings of dracogenesis in her blood.
The Halfbreed
Velraine's azure eyes are a sign that the dragon blood flowing in her veins has yet to awaken--or so it was thought.
Velraine was different. The power of dracogenesis smoldered within her from birth.
Her eyes thus never assumed the crimson hue that usually marks the awakening.
It was Velraine's first transformation that revealed this at last.
With the power of dracogenesis amplified, her awakening was fierce.
She lost all balance of body and mind and was flooded with bloodlust.
It was her mother Maralme who finally quelled her rampage.
The fearsome extent of Velraine's power is now clear--for her formidable mother's wounds took a month to fully heal.
The Dragon
Velraine was to later take up the legendary sword Wyrmtail.
The fearsome blade had only ever known two masters, but Velraine brandished it with power and authority.
Wyrmtail's first master was Reinar, and its second Maralme.
Their only daughter Velraine became its third.
She was born half-human, half-dragon, descended from two eminent dragon slayers.
Wyrmtail responded to this and to her, its fiery crimson glow changing. It gleamed first a dull silver and then began to emanate a cerulean light.
From that day forward, the sword would serve and protect Velraine, smiting all dragons who sought to do her harm.
Wyrmtail is a sentient blade that detects its wielder's will via brain waves and acts accordingly, thus serving as an incomparable offensive and defensive ally.
It, too, is said to be an ancient relic created by Animata.
With Maralme
Another day gone and her mother had not yet returned.
Velraine gazed up at the night sky, alone.
Today was her sixteenth birthday.
"She's forgotten," Velraine muttered to herself.
The wind stirred and grew violent, bowing trees and sweeping the clouds from the sky.
It was a moonless night--the night of a rare lunar eclipse.
Countless stars glimmered in the vast darkness overhead.
"Father..."
She could picture his face only dimly now.
Her mother had killed him.
A familiar anger welled up. She struggled to suppress it.
But tonight was different. Her rage could not be contained.
"K...k...ill. I want to k-kill..."
The negative impulses erupted out of control. She gasped in pain.
Her arms changed color and grew tough and sinewy. Her teeth grew into massive fangs and her nails into lethal talons.
Velraine had no way of knowing what was happening to her, for this was unlike any form of dracogenesis ever known.
Indeed, it went far beyond that.
The last thing she remembered was everything turning red.
- After Chapter 29
"To think she was born with this... Incredible..."
With a pained movement, Maralme leaned down to kiss her sleeping daughter's forehead.
Velraine had failed to escape her heritage in the end.
Moreover, that fate had been thrust upon her in an utterly inconceivable way.
She was born half-human, half-dragon, the power of dracogenesis smoldering within her from the start.
Eyeing her power and potential, the clan decided to recruit her as a dragon slayer.
Velraine would thus enter the world that had claimed her father's life, despite running from it for so long.
Maralme and Reinar's hopes for her were dashed in the name of the clan's prosperity and greater glory--but it was an unprecedented honor for someone who had not yet come of age.
Maralme would use the time she had left to play the mother she had never been.
Taking Velraine's hand in hers, she kissed it countless times.
And she prayed that her daughter would outlive her, even briefly.Trivia[]
