Skills are special abilities that have various effects in battle. Monsters learn 1 to 4 skills, while Adventurers learn 4 skills per job and can unlock up to 4 skill slots.

For a list of all skills and their users, see this page (Warning: very large page).

Skill Variables[]

How much damage or healing output a skill generates is determined by its user's stats.

  • Physical skills rely on the user's ATK and defender's DEF.
  • Magical skills (fire, ice, lightning, darkness, healing) rely on the user's MATK and defender's MDEF. This includes elemental weapon skills.

Skill Slots[]

Skill slots allow a character to use skills from their other jobs. Adventurers can unlock up to 4 skill slots, while monsters have no skill slots. All adventurers start with a single skill slot and can unlock more when their jobs reach certain levels. Any skill from an available job can be assigned to a skill slot—even skills that have not yet been unlocked—but only unlocked skills will activate in battle.

Skill Boost[]

Skill Boost is a stat that increases the activation rate of skills. The activation rate of a skill is its listed rate plus the unit's skill boost value. Skill Boost can be increased in three ways:

  • Acquiring the same unit again (+12% for Z Class, +10% for S/SS Class, +5% for other classes) through Pact of Truth or Pact of Fellowship. If a "+ Pact" is obtained, slightly more skill boost is acquired.
  • Recruitment in battle grants +5% or +3%.
  • A small chance when using any skill in combat (+0.1%), up to +0.2% per quest.
  • Using skill Candy items.

Math[]

Whenever a skill activates, the chance of getting a skill boost can be calculated with the following formula:

2% / (skill rate)

There are 4 phases of skills that can each independently trigger a skill boost: attack, healing, capsule, and counterattack. The Attack phase includes any offensive damage-dealing skills, offensive status effects, and stat boosts/debuffs. The Healing phase includes any healing spells and remedy spells. The Capsule phase applies solely to capsule-generating skills. Finally, the Counterattack phase only occurs on the enemy's turn and triggers for counter-type skills. Units can gain a maximum of 1 skill boost during each phase.

If a unit activates multiple skills, it has the opportunity to gain a skill boost during each of the phases. For example, Lewto could possibly activate Fire Pincer Area (50%), Anti-Ice Capsule (30%), and Mega Heal Self (30%) all at once. This gives him 3 chances to get a skill boost. The probability of getting a skill boost during the Attack phase is 2%/50% = 4%; the probability of getting a skill boost during either of the Healing or Capsule phases is 2%/30% = 6.66%. If he is lucky enough to get a skill boost during both the Attack and Healing phases, he has gained the maximum number of skill boosts during the quest and cannot gain another skill boost during the Capsule phase. If a unit activates multiple skills during the same phase, the one with the lowest skill rate is used for a single chance at triggering a skill boost.

Notes[]

  • The Skill Boost value is added to the base activation frequency of a skill, not multiplied. A unit activating a 60% base rate skill with a skill boost of 40% will end up with a total activation rate of 100% [(60 + 40)%] rather than 84% [60% * 140%]
  • Units can gain Skill Boosts in areas that don't offer Experience.
  • Once a unit reaches 100% Skill Boost, it can no longer be recruited from the Pact of Fellowship or the Pact of Truth.
  • If a unit dies, it loses any skill boosts gained prior to its death. However, it can gain skill boosts after being revived.
  • While there can only be a max of 5 capsules or magic bombs on the field at once, units can still gain a skill boost if the Capsule phase skill activates and nothing is generated.

Area of Effect[]

Different skills can affect different spaces or areas of the field, usually defined in the skill description on the unit's profile. Equip skills are passive bonuses granted as long as the unit is alive and the skill is active and equipped.

Each skill is unique based on unit - this means that a skill that activates in chain for one unit may only activate when leading an attack for another unit. In general, offensive weapon skills without a modifier do not activate in a chain, and offensive skills with an area modifier can activate in a chain. All spells (elemental attacks without Blade/Arrows/Strike in the name) can activate in a chain, and unique skills without modifiers should be looked up below. Exceptions are noted in the unit's individual pages.

Skills that deal damage or cause adverse effects will only affect enemy units; likewise, skills that heal or grant positive effects will only affect friendly units. Some skills will deal damage to both friendly and enemy units (e.g. Zavison's Indiscriminate Fire).
