Though "scholar" may have been merely a convenient role for this actor to play, that is not to say that the actor himself was not suitable for it. He came to the realization that people interact with one another based on a very specific set of variables: form, appearance, and circumstance. People judge who leads and who follows based on these criteria, without ever having to utter a word. They are slaves to their own preconceptions.
This epiphany led him to a new understanding of social interaction that he used to conduct further study on the academic applications of mind control.

He needs to look like a scholar. He needs to think like a scholar. He needs to BE a scholar. Only then can he hope to have some semblance of control over his power. To understand the reason for this single-minded focus, you need only understand the nature of his power.
During his study of psychiatry, something within him became unhinged, and suddenly anything that he imagined in his head was made real when those thoughts were passed through a magical tool. In other words, what he thought became reality, for better or for worse.
