The Archer
Pahrl is one of the stonefolk youngsters who will lead the next generation of her people. As the daughter of a warrior family--quite rare among the stonefolk--there are high expectations for her future.
To that end, she's received the very finest education.
She's learned to string bowstrings across her stony arms to launch multiple arrows at once. She can also pluck them like the strings of a harp to create music.
The Dream Bow
Though Pahrl's fine education has made her an accomplished warrior, her heart isn't in it.
There is something else she truly wants to do.
Her suppressed aspirations lend her strength.
The Mystic Bow
Pahrl hopes for harmonious coexistence rather than war.
She also believes in the miracle of turning emotions into strength. And she's willing to take up a machine, however taboo, if it can make that miracle a reality.

After Chapter 16
Pahrl was full of the confidence, pride, and self-satisfaction that come with an outstanding lineage and wealthy upbringing.
But on the battlefield, your station in life does not matter, and neither did it matter whether you were a good person or a person of importance.
In her first battle, Pahrl carelessly charged ahead and promptly found herself surrounded.
For the first time, she realized her enemies were out to mercilessly slaughter her. She froze stone still, unable to move or even utter a scream.
The alien predators pounced for the kill, their razor- sharp fangs bared. Suddenly, a lone figure joined the fray, and a crimson spray of blood arose all around.

Someone had come to Pahrl's rescue. The little stonegirl was unhurt. Looking up at her big, powerful savior from behind, she saw that it was Olber.
"You should be careful. You're only a child," he told her.
Olber had children, though he had not seen them for many years. They must be about Pahrl's age now. Relieved at having saved Pahrl, he smiled.
For the first time, Pahrl realized she was still a child who needed the protection of others to survive.
