The Dragon Slayer
Maralme is a 37-year-old warrior and legendary dragon slayer.
She is a living legend revered by dragon slayers the world over and the head of their clan.
Her eyes blaze a fiery red, the mark of one born to battle dragons.
Although scars cover her body, not one has resulted from a mortal wound.
They are remarkable evidence of her unparalleled judgment.
Her splendid crimson armor is regarded as a clan treasure.
The Weredrake
Dragon slayers are actually imprinted with dragon genes, believe it or not.
When harnessed, that power manifests in a phenomenon known as dracogenesis.
As the term implies, dragon slayers can essentially shapeshift into dragons.
Their pupils narrow into reptilian slits, their muscle mass grows strong and supple, and their reflexes and dynamic visual acuity grow superhuman.
The massive fangs that erupt from their mouths are emblematic of the wild and aggressive instincts that surge forth.
Few are allowed to utilize dracogenesis, however, for it requires a will strong enough to suppress the destructive, murderous, and predatory impulses that the transformation evokes.
Dragon genes have another side effect as well.
The body grows resistant to aging, so that the dragon slayer's appearance hardly changes with the passing of years.
The Wyrmmaster
A legendary weapon has long been passed down through the clan as well.
It is a sword of unprecedented power, and it is said that only one dragon slayer has ever been able to wield it.
Known as Wyrmtail, details of its origin and the material from which it was forged are unknown.
It is heavier than a 10,000-year-old dragon.
And it is hotter than a dragon's breath, which is said to be an unfathomable 10,000 degrees.
This sentient blade will move of its own free will to taste dragon blood.
True to its legendary name, Wyrmtail is a fearsome weapon indeed.
Maralme has managed to master Wyrmtail by invoking dracogenesis to the full extent of its power.
She has thus become only the second dragon slayer to ever wield it.
With Velraine
That dream again.
Maralme was woken by a nightmare that had haunted her countless times before.
The colossal dragon roared. She charged forward, unflinching. And then, out of the corner of her eye, an even larger dragon appeared.
Their prey was evidently the offspring of an even mightier beast.
She had been careless.
As Maralme steeled herself for certain death, a hand seized her arm and dragged her back.
"Stay back."
It was Reinar, her husband and the greatest dragon-slaying partner she had ever known. He flung her backward as he spoke.
"Rei--!"
But before she could fully form his name, the two dragons had savagely torn into him.
Maralme found herself stained red with his blood.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAH!"
She was awoken by her own scream.
Reinar had passed Wyrmtail on to her that day as his lifeblood spilled into the ground.
He had tried to speak, but Maralme could not catch what he said.
So in place of words, she removed the bandanna he wore and tied it around her own hair.
As she inhaled air thick with Reinar's blood, Wyrmtail blazed crimson with her wrath.
She slaughtered the two accursed dragons. Afterward, she resolved never to speak of how her recklessness had caused this tragedy.
And she vowed to do all in her power to ensure that no one would ever suffer so again--especially their beloved daughter.Trivia[]
