The Tormented
Ma'curi is a lizardfolk warrior who boasts that he's survived on strength alone.
He was, in fact, forced to survive alone in the wild after being abandoned by his parents as a child.
A starving marten attacked him shortly after he was abandoned, leaving him on the brink of death.
A band of passing thugs saved him, but they drew him into a life in which he was forced to fight their battles.
The battle scars he wears are a testament to his strength.
The Tortured
Ma'curi is ferocious in combat, to the point of appearing virtually suicidal. He tears across the battlefield as though actively seeking to be wounded.
For him, pain is life itself.
The Martyr
It was only a matter of time before Ma'curi turned to a device in search of greater strength.
But he miscalculated.
The device's physical augmentations alleviated the pain he perpetually sought. It sent nanomachines coursing through his bloodstream that blocked pain and healed him.
As a result, Ma'curi now relishes ever fiercer combat in his ongoing quest for pain.
After Chapter 23
Ma'curi had another talent that no one knew about--not even himself.
He had a gift for art and excelled at painting in particular. It was in his blood, for his parents were struggling artists.
It was upon his arrival on the alien planet that this talent first awakened and blossomed to life.
"Bizarre...yet so beautiful."
This was Ma'curi's impression of the curious wilderness that stretched away into the distance. The artist's blood within him stirred to life.
Searching out a brush, he began to paint that landscape onto a dingy canvas.
"I'll capture this peculiar world down to the last detail."
His comrades teased him about this abrupt artistic awakening as he put brush to canvas for the very first time, but their ridicule turned to praise the moment they laid eyes on his work.
After Chapter 30
The thirty-six landscapes in which Ma'curi depicted the legendary battles waged upon that alien planet would long be acclaimed across the universe as a great masterwork of the era.
Had his parents not been struggling artists who abandoned him to survive, he would not have taken up a life of battle and violence. Had he not taken that path, walking a fine line between life and death, his masterpieces would never have been born.
Thus began a new chapter in Ma'curi's life, one blessed with light and new meaning.
With Myne
- After Chapter 11
Myne was in the midst of capturing the city of Prah on canvas when Ma'curi peered over his shoulder at the painting.
"Impressive," he said admiringly.
Myne glanced back and shrieked in terror. Snatching up the canvas, he backed away slowly.
"Wh-what do you want? Are you going to kill me and take the painting?"
"N-now what in the world gave you that idea?"
Ma'curi had leaped back, startled by Myne's scream, but he approached again with a soothing gesture, hoping to calm him.
No such luck.
"Your face says it all!"
"This is the face I was born with, I'm afraid. But about that painting, it's so--"
"Wh-what are you after?! Stay away!"
With another shriek, Myne ran for his life without waiting for an answer, the half-finished painting still clutched to his chest.
"...Well, damn. Hm?"
Glancing down, Ma'curi realized that Myne's art supplies still lay at his feet, forgotten.
"Guess I could give them to him later...if he'll take them, that is."
In the end, he never got the chance to return the art supplies. He forgot them amidst the chaotic battles that followed.
Ma'curi had never known anything but a life of battle, but this experience would one day change him forever.Trivia[]
