Lunato is the elder of two brothers who guard Princess Palpa. He is a knight chosen from the best and brightest of the stonefolk. While he can be tactless and serious to a fault, he is a man of true integrity. He's actually developed feelings for the princess, but knowing that it can lead nowhere due to their difference in station, he's locked those feelings away to ensure that no one ever suspects.
The PetrifierThe strength of his resolve has manifested in the ability to petrify things, now part of his formidable arsenal of skills as a royal bodyguard.
The Royal GuardsmanHis desire to protect the one he secretly loves is amplified by the device he uses and fuels him in combat. He absolutely dominates the battlefield, his chivalric spirit overwhelming foes with torrential force.
- After Chapter 22
"P-Princess Palpa? Is everything all right?"
Lunato was standing watch outside the princess's bedchamber when she emerged suddenly, yawning and rather scantily clad.
He was perplexed by her undignified appearance, and even more so by what she said next.
"Titles and such matter not to me. Are we not all comrades living aboard the same ship?"
"B-but..." was the only word Lunato managed to get out.
Seeing Palpa in such an immodest state was enough to send a loyal servant like him into fits.
The princess is the support that upholds and sustains the hearts of her people. I would have you be more mindful of your station.
He steeled himself to say this aloud.
But at that moment, a mischievous breeze stirred, sending Palpa's thin garments fluttering.
That was the last sound Lunato uttered for several hours, for he had passed out.
And though he lamented his own weakness, he was grateful to that sneaky gust of wind.Contrary to his reputation as straitlaced and serious, Lunato evidently has certain weaknesses, too.
- After Chapter 23
"So you were at the castle too, then?" "It was a long, long time ago."
Zavison and Lunato were standing night watch together by the light of a blazing fire. The conversation had somehow drifted to talk of home--perhaps because home was so far away now.
"I had no intention of mentioning it to anyone. Not sure why I did."
The fire flared abruptly, and Zavison squinted at the sudden light. Thinking back to his own past, Lunato asked, "Have you any friends there? I was at the castle a long time. We might have some common acquaintances."
"None. As far as Prah is concerned, I was never there."
Lunato grasped his meaning at once and dropped the subject. After a moment, he asked, "And these days? What have you been doing?"
"Atoning, to put it dramatically. But honestly..."
Pausing, Zavison turned to the girl curled up beside him and caressed her hair. She slept on undisturbed, her breathing steady and serene."If it's not too much to ask, I just want to leave something behind that proves that I lived."
