The cub stood by his promise.

It was a pact with an explorer who had saved him from solitude. He didn't even know her name.

"I'll come back for you someday."

With those words, she had left something that resembled a thin metal plate behind and disappeared.

The cub sensed intuitively that it was something precious. He resolved to keep it close and wait patiently.

Time marched on.

The tiny cub was soon gone. In his place was an enormous beast with a regal air and a magnificent, flowing white mane.

But his face was unreadable. It was covered by something resembling a thin metal plate.

The explorer's mysterious gift had begun to speak and clung to his face.

Everything changed that day. His body gradually turned white, and flames spouted from his mouth whenever he roared.

Some years later, a certain explorer would describe him in her anecdotes as a lion both fearless and wise.
