The Spearman
Kem is one of the stonefolk youngsters who will lead the next generation of his people. While he was raised by civilians about as far removed from military affairs as could be, his true father was a veteran spearman. Although he did not know it, he too was destined to take up the spear.
The fateful moment took place at a barbecue for a local children's club. The spear he picked up felt instantly familiar in his hands, as though it were meant to be.
The Dream Spear
From that day forward, he would always skewer meat on a spear, as though out of superstition. While others saw him as crazy, to him it felt like a sacred gift.
The Mystic Spear
One day, a sudden and visceral revelation struck him: the spear that felt so natural in his hands was made of materials not of this world. Perhaps that, too, was his blood speaking to him.

"It's gone!"
Kem woke up one morning to find something very important to him missing from the end of his spear.
He immediately looked over at Gatz.
"Gimme back my meat!" Kem shouted.
"Too late. It's been in my stomach for some time. Probably further down the line by now."
Gatz was lying, of course. He had not eaten it. He had most likely donated it to some organization that feeds the needy. He feigned ignorance but paled at Kem's next words.
"Can't believe you were able to eat it. I mean, it's been out in the sun for over three months now."
As soon as he heard that, Gatz leapt to his feet and raced off.
Kem ran after him until he caught up with Gatz at an orphanage. From the yard there wafted the delicious smell of grilling meat.

"N-no, don't! Don't eat that!"
Gatz shouted frantically, but just a moment too late. The children were already stuffing their smiling faces with the savory meat.
The next moment, the children began to shout how delicious it was and how they were so grateful to Gatz.
They showed no signs of food poisoning.
As Gatz stood there, bewildered, Kem came running up.
"I know you're doing a good thing here, but isn't there a better way?"
Kem wanted Gatz to understand that stealing can never be justified, even for a good cause. He would eventually face consequences if he persisted.
Perhaps it was the stern, knightly blood in his veins that compelled him.
"Aw, mind your own business," Gatz fired back.
However, Gatz bore no grudge against Kem. It was the first time anyone had treated him as a person rather than as a thief.Trivia[]
