Profile[edit | edit source]
Ellvern is a 60-year-old physician well versed in all manner of medicines. He is not an officially sanctioned doctor, however, and consequently practices his arts in secret. He has a dark air about him, perhaps due to his life in the shadows. No one knows why he strayed from the path of light.
The PhysicianHis medical skills are top-notch, a fact he has proven time and time again as the personal physician to a number of prominent figures. He shows interest only in vast sums of money.
The SurgeonIn an effort to attain even greater heights, he has attached an elaborate machine to his body. The surgical procedure is said to have torn the very fabric of space asunder.
"You could have saved so many more lives had you put your skills to proper use," Amimari said angrily.
- After Chapter 16
He confessed the truth to Amimari alone.
- After Chapter 22
"I've no interest in saving lives."
- After Chapter 30
"Seeing men of power grovel and depend on my skills--those very same men who would not accept me as a physician--is sheer ecstasy," he said, setting down his scalpel.
Ellvern had been a gifted surgeon with a bright future, attempting all sorts of innovations in the medical field. This had incurred the wrath of his superiors."They wouldn't be alive today were it not for my scalpel. I now hold their lives in these two hands. This is exactly what I've wanted for a very long time!"
"May I ask one thing?" Edg'low said, sitting up straight.
Ellvern fixed him with a level stare and said nothing. Edg'low continued, undeterred.
"Why did you save me?"
Ellvern again offered no reply. Growing impatient, Edg'low went on in a rush.
"Not only did helping me earn you no money, it also cost you time. It defied every principle you claimed to hold dear at the time."
Ellvern blinked and averted his gaze.
"No real reason. Are we done?"
He rose and turned away. Staring at his back, Edg'low muttered in a strained voice, "I know about it, you know. I know that saving me cost you your medical career."
Ellvern halted. He thought back on how much passion he'd once had, now long dead and gone.
"It was a blessing in disguise," he said. "It was you who showed me where the true lesions are."
With that, he walked off and disappeared.Sitting alone, Edg'low repeated "the true lesions" to himself over and over again, puzzling over the words.
