The Sightless
Djugan is a blind warrior who has developed heightened senses of hearing and smell that allow him to detect an opponent's location with startling accuracy. This is said to be a result of his addiction to the thrill of battle.
He is also famously obsessive about cleanliness, and it is said that his superb sense of smell can detect filth and germs invisible to the naked eye.
The Discerning
Lately he's become self-conscious about his body odor, which evidently smells like a beastman. But where did it come from? Even his discerning nose has failed to pinpoint the culprit.
The Clairvoyant
His sight is now showing signs of recovery thanks to a machine's low frequency stimulation of his central nervous system. Still, he refuses to open his eyes. It seems he is loath to gaze upon this tainted world.
After Chapter 22
"I hear something--a feeble but distinct pulse."
Djugan uttered these words when he first set foot on the alien planet. Although he couldn't see the strange landscape that stretched before his eyes, his other senses detected something that no one else could perceive.
"Curious, though... A single aura looms here, yet there are several pulses..."
With 36AIS
- After Chapter 30
Djugan sensed 36AIS's presence behind him.
"There is much animosity in your heart," he said. "And yet I sense no doubt in you. One could even say your sense of purpose is crystal clear."
36AIS explained that acceptance was a way to free oneself from doubt. Then she asked:
"Do you not wish to see the world?"
She sensed intuitively that Djugan's eyesight was returning.
The reason was unclear. But the realm of miracles had grown familiar to Djugan and his companions on this voyage to the stars.
"There is more to the world than what is visible to the eyes," he replied. "There are things that can be understood because they are not visible, and I want to cherish them. Not accepting something is another way to free oneself from doubt, is it not?"
With Rejin
Djugan was soaking in the bath one day when he suddenly felt a presence.
His psychic sense took wing and, surveying the area, pinpointed the culprit.
It was Rejin, dozing a short distance away.
Well, not quite. More precisely, it was an alarming presence drifting about Rejin.
"Whatever it is, it isn't good. And yet..."
The thing entwined about Rejin resembled something that people intuitively fear--yet it was remarkably attuned to him. A suppressed warmth even seemed to seep through.
It was his life force.
Djugan sensed that the vitality welling up from Rejin measured hundreds of times greater than that of the average person.
And something was eating away at it.
Hoping to identify it, Djugan woke Rejin and inquired about his health.
"Sudden bouts of fatigue strike now and then, but after a snooze I'm fit as a fiddle again. Like now, see?" Rejin replied, brandishing his sword flamboyantly.
Raising an eyebrow, he then asked a question in return:
"Say, Djugan, maybe you should get dressed?"
