The Pleasure Seeker

Camellia is a 24-year-old woman whose wanton ways are no secret around the city's pleasure quarter.

She revels in all the pleasures of the flesh and has earned some highly unflattering nicknames.

The Fallen

She utterly debases herself without shame or scruple. Her reasoning is thus:

Justice, order, and convention are all powerless to protect anything. If they have no such power, obeying them is likewise meaningless.

Camellia was once a highborn lady, hailing from a land devastated by a violent coup d'etat.

There was a time when she dreamed of rebuilding her fallen nation, that lofty purpose sustaining her through days of hardship and despair.

The Hedonist

But her fortitude was only rewarded with further treachery by her supposedly loyal retainers.

All that she held beautiful and dear was defiled, ripped away, and lost that day.

They made her succumb by force--that peculiarly male logic that "might makes right."

She awoke the next morning in the pleasure quarter, a place utterly foreign to her. From that day, she cast off her old name.

She was not defiled. She consoles herself thus.

What followed seemed born of an instinct for self-preservation:

She tries to heal wounds that refuse to heal by straddling men and making them succumb to her.

How many nights had she spent like this now?

Under the seedy city lights, Camellia sized up the men passing by.

But tonight was different. A peculiar man strode past.

He wore two scabbards, yet one was empty.

This was undoubtedly a man with a story, she thought.

And there was something else about him as well...

"Well, you're a handsome one."

She called out to him in the clearest voice she could muster.

Her usual delivery was more brazen, lascivious. But there was something different about today.

He responded with indifference, but she wasn't about to let him get away.

So Camellia demonstrated the arts she had learned on the streets.

He fell for it like all the rest. She felt a twinge of disappointment.

Men really are all the same...

Yet that night proved different indeed.

When he pulled her close, she noticed a distinct scent. It was one she had encountered long ago. What was it again...?

Then it came to her. It was the fragrance of spring cherry blossoms.

Without thinking, she pressed her lips to his.

She didn't understand the reason herself. But she knew with sudden and shocking force that she couldn't let him go.

The next morning, the single camellia gracing a corner of the room had fallen from its stem.

She introduced herself as Camellia. The man simply said, "I see," and walked out the door.

Reaching up to a nook above the door, Camellia drew out a naked sword.

Though she had not polished it in some time, it retained a brilliant luster.

It, too, was named Camellia. Its blade was stained with the lifeblood of the foe who had destroyed her homeland.

Feeling a kinship with the sword, she had borrowed its name.

Her true name was Karen. In her mother tongue, it meant someone adorable that one wished to protect.

There was nothing remotely amusing about that hope at this point.

A month later, a band of foolish travelers arrived in town, claiming that they sought the Maker.
